Seminar for planners, project managers, operators, and auditors

Data Center Design & Implementation according to EN 50600 and ISO/IEC 22237

Data center design from real projects: risk analysis, Availability Classes, disciplines, contracts, and commissioning according to the state of the art

Register now

At a glance

In five days, you learn how a data center is designed, tendered, built, and commissioned according to EN 50600: from the business risk analysis through the Availability Class for each discipline to acceptance.

You can then justify design decisions with the standard, to clients, planners, and auditors.

  • The design process of the standard

    The seminar follows the planning and implementation process of EN 50600-1: from the requirements profile based on business, IT, and data center strategy through the business risk analysis and the choice of Availability and Protection Classes to the design parts EN 50600-2-1 to 2-5 for building, power supply, cooling, cabling, and security systems.

  • From contract to certification

    It also covers work stages, contracts, and tendering, commissioning in stages, and the path to certification.

  • Working on real plans

    All trainers come from real projects; in group work and on real floor plans, hydraulic schematics, and circuit diagrams, you apply the standard to specific projects.

  • The core seminar

    It is the second seminar of the Data Center Specialist training path and the core seminar for everyone who designs, tenders, builds, or accepts data centers.

Why Design & Implementation?

EN 50600 is now regarded as a generally accepted rule of technology for data centers.

If you carry out the risk analysis properly, you build in redundancy where the business needs it, and nowhere else.

This saves you investments that do not reduce risk and protects you from design decisions that cannot be justified to the client, planner, or auditor on the basis of the standard. The seminar follows the design process of EN 50600-1: from the requirements profile based on the business model, IT strategy, and data center strategy, through the risk matrix and the choice of classes, to the design parts for each discipline, work stages and contracts, commissioning in stages, and certification.

A contractual basis, not a specification

The standard reflects the consensus of experts from 34 CENELEC member countries and can form the contractual basis for consulting, design, and implementation services, either directly or through a technical clause. However, it does not replace design work and is not a specification of works.

Mandatory, recommended, or a question of risk

If you use the standard in a functional specification, a tender, or a contract, you need to know which requirement is mandatory, which is a recommendation, and which depends on the business and risk analysis. This is exactly where the seminar comes in.

Conformity according to EN 50600-1

According to EN 50600-1, a design conforms to the standard only if a business risk analysis has been carried out, the Availability Class is based on it, the Protection Classes and the energy efficiency enablement level have been chosen, and the design process has gone through its phases.

Higher class, higher investment

EN 50600-1 itself says: the higher the Availability Class, the higher the investment, as a rule.

Who it is for

Who is this seminar for?

Specialist planners and engineers

for electrical, cooling, building, fire protection, I&C/BMS, and cabling whose tenders and designs require conformity with EN 50600.

Project managers, general contractors, and turnkey contractors

in data center construction who need to place the standard in work stages and contracts.

Consultants, architects, and building designers

specializing in data centers who prepare requirements profiles, functional specifications, and site assessments.

Operations managers and facility managers

who are responsible for a new build, an extension, or a refurbishment and accept it.

IT infrastructure managers

who derive the requirements profile from the IT strategy and commission the design.

Auditors and certifiers

who check designs and existing data centers against EN 50600.

Manufacturers, system integrators, and installers

of infrastructure components who discuss classes, interfaces, and acceptance with planners.

We recommend the seminar Data Center – General Principles or comparable knowledge of the disciplines, Availability Classes, and the structure of EN 50600; the group work assumes this basic knowledge. Experience in design, construction, or operation helps but is not a requirement.

Trainers and credentials

Trainers who work on current projects

The trainers on this seminar come from real projects; they have applied what they teach in their own data center projects. Which trainers lead a date depends on the date and format; the content is the same.

What you will take away

After the seminar you will be able to

  1. apply the planning and implementation process according to EN 50600-1 in its phases, with responsibilities and iterations, and derive a requirements profile from the business model, IT strategy, and data center strategy;

  2. set up a business and risk analysis with a risk matrix of impact and probability of occurrence, and use it to justify the Availability Class for each infrastructure, the Protection Classes, and the energy efficiency enablement level;

  3. read the requirements and recommendations of EN 50600-2-1 to 2-5 for building, power supply, cooling, cabling, and security systems, and distinguish what is mandatory, what is recommended, and what depends on the risk analysis;

  4. analyze floor plans, hydraulic schematics, and circuit diagrams and assess them against the requirements of the standard and of certification;

  5. place EN 50600 as a technical clause in work stages according to the German HOAI and VOB, in tenders, and in general contractor and turnkey contracts;

  6. plan commissioning in stages from factory acceptance to the integrated systems test, anchor it in the contract, and involve the operations staff from the acceptance test onward;

Content

Six modules

The six modules follow the path of a data center project: from the requirements profile and the risk analysis through the design of the disciplines to commissioning and certification.

  1. EN 50600 is to be regarded as a generally accepted rule of technology for data centers; it does not replace design work and is not a specification of works. The module places the standard in the types of service (consulting, design, implementation, and operation), in work stages, and in contracts.

    • Standard, directive, certification: how a standard is created, why there is no single data center standard, structure and conformity requirements of EN 50600
    • The role of EN 50600 for consultants, planners, contractors, and operators; clarification for existing data centers: which classes in which parts
    • Work stages 1 to 9 according to HOAI and VOB; award in individual trades, under the general contractor model, and under the turnkey contractor model
    • Contractual basis according to BGB (German Civil Code), VOB, and HOAI; EN 50600 as a technical clause and its order of precedence in the contract; status of the adoption into ISO/IEC 22237
  2. The business and risk analysis is the basis for everything: the business model determines the IT strategy, and the IT strategy determines the data center. The module leads from the requirements profile through the risk matrix to the choice of Availability Class according to EN 50600-1.

    • Positioning the data center within the company: data as a raw material, definition according to EN 50600 regardless of size
    • Planning and implementation process according to EN 50600-1 in phases with changing responsibilities; iteration in the first four phases; system architecture with the operational view first
    • Risk analysis according to EN 50600-1: impact and probability of occurrence, risk matrix, cost of downtime as the basis for design decisions
    • Availability Classes 1 to 4 according to EN 50600-1: risk assessment criteria for each class, from single path to fault tolerant, paths at maximum load; growing influence of compliance requirements
  3. Protection Classes are assigned independently of Availability Classes, and EN 50600-2-1 and 2-5 only apply together. The module explains location, building construction, security zones, and fire protection in terms of prevention, detection, and suppression.

    • EN 50600-2-1 site and building construction: mandatory, recommended, or dependent on the risk assessment; risk reduction through structural, technical, and organizational measures; methods according to ISO 27005, EN 31010, ISO 22317, ISO 22301, and BSI IT-Grundschutz
    • Protection Classes 1 to 4 and Resistance Classes according to EN 1627; fire resistance by Protection Class; recommendations on computer room size and racks per row
    • EN 50600-2-5 security systems: “onion skin” principle, five risk areas, security levels, dealing with residual risk
    • Fire protection in detail: oxygen reduction, multi-sensor and aspirating smoke detection systems, gas extinguishing systems with pressure relief, water-based systems, PFAS regulation for extinguishing agents; an alarm should not automatically interrupt operations
  4. In power supply and cooling, Availability Classes are defined by the required function, not by redundancy. The module covers design according to EN 50600-2-2 and 2-3 and the energy efficiency of cooling.

    • EN 50600-2-2 power supply and distribution: primary and secondary supply, four defined connection points, dimensioning from the Availability Class to losses and operating requirements, three granularity levels
    • EN 50600-2-3 environmental control: controlled and uncontrolled spaces, limits for supply air temperature, humidity, and air quality as an SLA condition, extreme outdoor conditions as a design case
    • Interaction of power supply and cooling; UPS rooms and batteries; GWP of refrigerants as a factor in the choice of system
    • Energy efficiency through cooling: free cooling before compression refrigeration, no air short circuits, only the air volume that is needed, efficiency never at the expense of availability
  5. EN 50600-2-4 defines four Availability Classes for telecommunications cabling and does not recommend Class 1. The module connects architecture, Availability Class, and the physical design of the cable pathways.

    • Functional elements of the supply cabling and the computer room cabling; point-to-point only within the same or an adjacent rack
    • Requirements per Availability Class: redundant carrier connections from Class 2, cross-connect from Class 2, two separate paths from Class 3, redundant distributor levels in Class 4
    • Protection Class 3 for building entrance facilities, computer rooms, control room, and main distributor; EN 50174-2: separation between power and data cables, coupling attenuation, shielded and unshielded cables
    • Cable trays: initial fill of no more than 40%, cable volume of copper compared with fiber
  6. Operation is the longest phase in the life cycle, so its processes and KPIs belong in the design from the start. The module concludes with commissioning in stages and a comparison of certifications.

    • EN 50600-3-1: operational and management processes, prioritization by business model, introduction as a maturity process; PUE variants according to EN 50600-4-2 and their system boundaries
    • Commissioning as part of the contract: Level 0 to 5, from program and design content through factory acceptance and functional testing to the integrated systems test; operations staff in every stage; manufacturer documentation before testing begins
    • Certification analysis in practice: reading and assessing floor plans, hydraulic schematics, and circuit diagrams
    • Certifications compared: criteria catalogs according to EN 50600 and TSI versus the Tier classification; scope, overlaps, differences, how a certification works

Frequently asked questions

It is recommended but not mandatory. The group work assumes that you know the disciplines, Availability Classes, and the structure of EN 50600. If you bring this knowledge from your own work, you can start directly; in the Data Center Specialist training path, Design & Implementation is the second of four seminars.

The design process in its phases: requirements profile, business risk analysis, choice of Availability and Protection Classes and of the energy efficiency enablement level, design of each discipline according to EN 50600-2-1 to 2-5, work stages and contracts, commissioning in stages, and preparation for certification. You apply this in group work and on real plans.

Yes, from the perspective of the planner and the building owner. You learn the conformity conditions of EN 50600-1, the criteria catalogs of the certifications, how a certification works, and the certification analysis based on floor plans, hydraulic schematics, and circuit diagrams. The seminar itself is not a certification of your data center; that is carried out by a certification body.

EN 50600 defines one of four Availability Classes for each infrastructure, that is, for power supply, cooling, and cabling, selected on the basis of a business risk analysis. Tier levels belong to a different certification standard with a different scope and approach; the two are not directly comparable. The seminar compares the certifications in terms of scope, overlaps, and differences.

As a live webinar, yes: the in-person seminar and the live webinar teach the same content at the same price, with the same group work, the same exam, and the same certificate; you choose the format when you register. The seminar is currently not offered as a video course. The seminar dates show which date takes place in which format and language.

Yes, as a live webinar. The in-person dates are held in German; the language and format are shown for each date.

Yes. DCE academy does not sell products and does not represent any manufacturer; no products are sold in the seminar. Its aim is to pass on knowledge and train people well, with experts who know their subject from ongoing projects.

After passing the exam, you receive a seminar certificate from DCE academy. You receive the link to the online exam by email after the seminar and have one week to take it. The certificate does not expire, can be verified publicly, and counts as the second of four seminars toward the Data Center Specialist certificate; after that, Data Center Operations – Professional and Deep Dive – Power Supply & Cooling follow in any order.
